Oakmont Lower School

Lower School

Oakmont’s Lower School teachers respect and work with each child according to his or her academic background and learning style. The small multi-age, hands-on classes promote social and academic interaction among students of varying ages. Oakmont’s experienced and caring teachers help students learn the core subjects in an integrated curriculum, where they begin to recognize and explore connections between the disciplines. For example, students collect Austin’s weather data throughout the school year, study the weather cycles, and use graphs and statistics to recognize patterns and make projections for the future.

Students in Oakmont’s Lower School have the option of a four or five day program. On Monday through Thursday, they work on the core academic courses of math, language arts, science, and social studies in an integrated, hands-on curriculu

The art and design program at Oakmont provides students with an understanding of the language of art, its functions and nature, the relationship of art to the environment, history and the culture of the child. Oakmont’s music curriculum provides opportunities to explore sound through singing, moving, listening, song-writing, and playing instruments, as well as an introduction to music theory.

On Friday, students enrich and reflect on their studies through drama, storytelling, music and movement.
