Journeys at
Oakmont
Multicultural Camp
Journeys is 10 days
of world travel, from 9am-1pm June 16-June 27.
Monday-Thursday we
will be immersed in different regions of the world,
focusing on one
region each day. Fridays are designated for field trips. Transportation
to and
from the field trips will be determined according to the number of
campers.
Our
focus regions include: Africa, East
Asia, North America, Central America, South America, the Middle East
and
Europe. The children will be given a Journeys passport and receive
stamps for
each country they “visit.”
Every
day will begin in the computer
lab engaging in interactive websites about the geography, weather, and
cultural
features of the region. The children will also have an opportunity to
write to
their “keypal.” Keypals are the modern, e-mail version of the pen pal.
Next, we
will learn a song or poem in a language found within the region. This
will be
followed by a game popular in a country from within the region. Our
daily snack
will consist of ethnic cuisine found in the region and be
prepared by the
children with guidance from the teachers. Following snack, the group
will have
the opportunity to make a craft reflective of the region's
culture. The
day closes with creative dramatics, focusing on diverse folktales and
legends.
